Why Are My Tires Wearing Unevenly? Causes and Fixes
The wear pattern on a tire is a clue to what is wrong with your car. Here is how to read it.
Both outer edges worn
Usually under-inflation. Check pressure monthly and set it to the door-jamb number.
Center worn
Usually over-inflation. Reduce pressure to the recommended value.
One edge worn (inside or outside)
Usually an alignment problem, specifically camber or toe. Have the alignment checked, especially after hitting a curb or pothole.
Cupping or scalloping
Worn or weak shocks and struts can let the tire bounce, creating dips in the tread. The suspension should be inspected.
Feathering
Tread blocks worn smooth on one side and sharp on the other often points to toe misalignment.
Prevention
- Rotate tires every 5,000 to 7,500 miles.
- Keep pressure correct.
- Get an alignment when you buy new tires or notice pulling.
